Meropides or Meropes

thumb kos-meropidesAccording to tradition, Merops the son of Triopa, had taken over the whole island of Kos and had named the island Meropis. He named the residents Meropes or Meropides.
A descendent of the Meropides was named Koos or Kos and it was from him that the island got its name Kos.
